This is the finale to the Balsamic Butter Sauce meal. Why call it a meal based on that? Well, because I covered every single thing on my plate with this lovely Balsamic Butter Sauce right before serving the meal. Yes, it really was that good.
The original recipe called for tilapia. However, we are huge fans of ono lately, so I used that instead. It was very good. I think in this instance though, the tilapia might have been even better.
My husband insists that it was perfect as is, but I’m still thinking that tilapia would have been better. A more delicate fish might have been even more perfect with that amazing sauce. And this meal was most definitely all about the sauce!
Sauteed Ono (or Tilapia) with Balsamic Butter Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon light flavor olive oil
- 2 ono or tilapia fillets I used ono, but I honestly think tilapia would have been better with this meal
- kosher salt
- fresh cracked pepper
- Balsamic Butter Sauce
Instructions
- Heat oil in large skillet over high heat. Sprinkle fish with salt and pepper. Saute fish until golden, 4 minutes on each side for ono and 2 minutes on each side for tilapia.
- Drizzle with warm balsamic butter sauce right before serving.

Wow, how very unique! At least for me 🙂 We have tons of tilapia where we're from but we usually grill it whole and stuff it with tomatoes and onions. This is a nice twist!

This sounds great – I have never tried Ono and I am not sure if I have seen it in our grocery stores. I will have to keep an eye out for it. I'm gonna try the balsamic butter sauce soon!

I have never heard of or seen Ono in the grocery store or the fish market in NH. I will have to ask specifically next time I am at the fish market if they ever have it. What type of fish is it and what is the taste similar too? I will definitely be making a batch or two of balsamic butter sauce to drizzle over the tilapia I just bought, the asparagus, the brussels sprouts, the bagels…… lol Thank you for the wonderful recipes! You make me look SO GOOD in the kitchen!! =)

The sauce works great over tilapia, so you are set. Ono is a very mild, firm white fish most often caught in Hawaii. I was lucky for a while and my local store regularly had it in stock. I haven't seen it in a while.
