To quote, Deb, “This is a tangy, subtly spicy, delicious mutt of a barbecue sauce.” I wanted to come up with my own original description, but really? How do I come close to the awesomeness that is summed up in that description?
This is a delicious barbecue sauce. It is a total hodgepodge of flavors from all over the world combined into one unique sauce. My husband loved this sauce as soon as he tasted it while it was still simmering on the stove.
I was actually searching for a spicier BBQ sauce, something close to our beloved Rudy’s sauce, however this recipe was recommended so highly and turned out so different from anything I’ve tried before, it is a keeper.
I now have two extra jars of it in the freezer, for the next time I am in need of great barbecue sauce.
You can also make ketchup at home quite easily.
Homemade Barbecue Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 large onion about 1 ½ cups finely minced
- 3 garlic cloves about 1 tablespoon minced
- 1/2 cup light flavored olive oil
- 1 cup tomato paste 10 ounces
- 1 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 cup honey
- 1 cup Dijon mustard
- 1 cup hoisin sauce
- 1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons chili powder I used NM red chili
- 1 tablespoon ground cumin
- 1/2 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes
Instructions
- In a large pot over low heat, saute the onions and garlic with the oil for about 15 minutes. Cook them just until the onions are translucent, not browned. Add all remaining ingredients and bring to a boil while stirring. Reduce heat to a simmer and then simmer uncovered for 30 minutes.
- Use immediately or let cool and then store in refrigerator or freezer.
- This recipe makes 6 cups and the leftovers freeze well.

Freeze the left-overs? What left-overs? If this sauce was in my house my husband would have it at each and every meal. Sounds wonderful!

It sounds yummy! I made a homemade bbq sauce this weekend and it seems whenever I make it, my husband says there is something missing that makes it different from the bottled versions. I'll have to give this one a shot next time 🙂

P.S.: If not home-made, I've been a great fan of bbq sauces with JD in them!

Perfect timing, Mary, I am completely out of bbq sauce and am determined to make my own instead of buying more! I need to perfect the art before summer fully hits 🙂

Ewwww, I hate BBQ! ha ha ha ha, yeah, right.
I'll have to give it a try. Did you just use it as a finishing sauce or did you cook it onto meats on the grill? Doesn't seem to have too much sugar so wouldn't burn too bad if applied at the end.

I love experimenting when it comes on my sauce, but I can’t deny your sauce looks tasty and want to try it with any of my menu for my family. Just wondering if you have any suggestion of very hot sauce?

This sounds great but I have one question. What is hoisin sauce and where do I find it? We have foodland, piggly wiggly and wal mart grocery stores near me.

I did a search on dogpile.com and this is what it said: Hoisin sauce is a sauce and glaze used in Chinese cooking. If you can't find it here is a recipe that you can make it with:Homemade Hoisin Sauce
4 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons black bean paste or peanut butter
1 tablespoon honey or molasses
2 teaspoons white wine vinegar
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons sesame oil
20 drops hot sauce
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Combine all ingredients together.

It also says most stores carry it including Wal-Mart.

This is one of my favorite barbecue sauce recipes. One of the reasons I like it so much it is doesn't use any ketchup. Too many times I'll make a sauce with ketchup in the recipe and it ends up tasting like spicy ketchup instead of barbecue sauce.
Haven't tried it on a chopped pork, yet, but it's amazing on grilled chicken.

Hoisin sauce is a thick, fragrant sauce commonly used in Chinese cuisine. However, if you’re looking for a terrific barbecue sauce recipe that doesn’t require a special ingredient, this Sweet and Spicy BBQ Sauce is a great one, as is this Tangy Memphis BBQ Sauce.
