Brazilian Caipirinha Cocktail

Brazilian Caipirinha Cocktail recipe by Barefeet In The Kitchen
I was introduced to the Brazilian Caipirinha (pronounced kay-peer-reen-ya) while visiting family last month. The primary ingredient in this cocktail is Ypioca Cachaca; a liquor distilled from pure sugar cane juice and then aged in special wooden barrels, giving it a unique taste and fragrance. Cachaça is the most popular distilled liquor in Brazil.

The main difference between cachaca and rum is the fact that rum is usually made from molasses, while cachaca is made from fresh sugar cane juice that is fermented and distilled. As some rums, are also made by this process, cachaca is sometimes referred to as "Brazilian rum. ~ source wikipedia

Despite the fact that this drink is made from sugar cane juice and then slightly sweetened with cane sugar, it is not a very sweet drink. The lime twist makes it quite tart as a matter of fact. This is basically liquor on ice with a twist. Adjust the sweetness to your preference, I preferred mine a bit sweeter to tame the bite of the liquor. The Caipirinha is a uniquely different drink that I recommend you try, if you ever have the chance.

Yield: 1 serving
(printable recipe)

1 lime, quartered
1-2 teaspoons of cane sugar, I recommend the higher amount
1 1/2 ounces Ypioca Crystal Cachaça

Place the lime pieces in the bottom of a small glass. Add the cane sugar and muddle it into the lime, releasing juices and melting the sugar. Add the Ypioca and fill the glass with crushed ice. Stir well before serving. Enjoy!
