Frozen Fruit Salad

Frozen Fruit Salad recipe by Barefeet In The Kitchen

Frozen cantaloupe? Frozen grapes? Frozen banans? I had to try it. A while back, my sister mentioned to me that she had frozen some cantaloupe and loved it as a snack. I froze some cantaloupe overnight and then gave it a try. I let it thaw on the counter for 20-30 minutes prior to serving it. My boys absolutely loved it!

The cantaloupe was so successful; I decided to freeze some grapes too. I've frozen grapes for smoothies for years, but I've never eaten them that way. We all enjoyed these frozen grapes. I let them thaw on the counter for 20-30 minutes prior to eating them and they were great. Still chewy and icy in the middle, but not hard little rocks.

After seeing how well each of those fruits turned out, I went ahead and sliced some bananas and stuck them in the freezer for about 30 minutes. Sure enough, delicious that way as well, although we ate those immediately. The bananas thawed pretty quickly.

I happily tossed the remaining fruits together and made a quick breakfast fruit salad for my boys.  They ate this with Cinnamon Spice Soaked and Baked Oatmeal and they both told me it was an awesome breakfast. My oldest son informed me that it tasted "like ice cream, but with a fruity flavor." I wouldn't necessarily describe it the same way, but I did enjoy it.

I had heard of freezing grapes for snacks, but never tried it. What else am I missing out on?? Please tell me if there are other frozen fruits I should try!

  1. I make frozen grapes ALLLLL the time, especially during the summer. They are a great healthy snack and very familiar to a popsicle according to your taste buds.

  2. Frozen grapes was an old Weight Watcher trick. They are also great served with wine - yum! I've been freezing peaches and put them in everything. I also like to flash freeze strawberries and blueberries so I can grab a few here and there. Love frozen grapes! Haven't tried cantaloupe but I will now :) Have a happy Wednesday.

For smoothies and such, we always have bananas in the freezer. But, I haven't tried grapes...sound like cooling summer treats!

  6. Wow! so the bananas didn't turn brown? Every summer we picked wild blackberries in the forest and keep them in thefreezer for smoothie but I saw my kids snack on them, I never thought it could be tasty. i thought it would be too hard. But now I change my mind, in the cereal is agreat idea.

  8. I love frozen grapes, however I noticed this summer my teeth were super sensitive to the cold. I had to suck on them a bit before biting into them.

  14. Looks Yummy! Recently my dad, who is on a diet, foisted off a box of fig newtons on me. I guess he figured better my waist than his. Well, to stop myself from scarfing the entire box in one sitting, I decided I'd be really clever and put them in the freezer. This worked well until I discovered that frozen fig newtons are DELICIOUS! Or at least the were delicious... I fear they didn't last long after that discovery was made. That's what I get for trying to outsmart myself!

  16. Love frozen fruits too! They are great for smoothies! Unfortunately, we can't freeze stone fruits...I think they will be mushy when they are thawed.

  22. It's a healthier version of ice cream or sorbet. I love it! I used to eat frozen banana but totally forgot about it. This is great for kids!

  23. My girls like to eat frozen grapes, too. This is a good idea, I have one banana left that I might have to freeze now. I bet frozen watermelon and strawberries would be good too. The other good thing about doing this is your fruit will last longer!

My daughters also eat frozen french fries off the tray - I always tell them yuck, but then I figure it won't hurt them so - whatever:-)

  24. I have to admit texture is a big part of my appreciation for food, and I find that the texture of most fruits changes in the freezer to such an extent that it really turns my taste buds off! I can only use it in baked goods (or smoothies).

  25. ECL - Frozen cookies are even more dangerous around here than room temp ones. I found out the hard way several years ago. Chocolate chip pudding cookies straight from the freezer are way beyond addicting!

TBD - If only that worked for cookies and me!

Anne - I'm a complete freak about textures and food most of the time. I can't even describe why certain textures bother me so much, but they do. However, frozen fruits totally worked for me. I wouldn't let them thaw much at all though.

  26. My husband LOVES frozen grapes. Never thought about freezing melon or bananas - though (DUH) I do freeze them whole if they're turning. Thanks for the tip!

  27. I honestly had never thought of freezing a fruit salad. LOVE IT. It was 113 here this last weekend and that would have been a nice treat.

  29. I am addicted to frozen raspberries and blueberries (two fruits I don't care for thawed out). I add the frozen blueberries to my cereal/granola and it keeps the milk ice cold. I also gnaw on frozen strawberries and peaches as a snack. My freezer is full of frozen fruit - id be lost without it for snacking, breakfasts, sweet cravings and smoothies.
